The Tongan Health Society (THS) has been operational for 20+ years. The Society has four medical centres based at Onehunga, Ōtāhuhu, Panmure and Kelston.

We provide high-quality services at six school-based clinics in South Auckland, a Community Centre and Garden in Onehunga, a specialised Integrated Outcomes Unit based at our Onehunga clinic, a research centre in Manukau, and an ECE Preschool in Manurewa.

We employ General Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Social Workers, Navigators, Administrators, Researchers and ECE Teachers. Our work is done in clinics, preschool, homes, schools, church halls and the community. We work with children, adults, families, youth, and elderly. We work with people from all cultures; we value diversity and inclusivity. We research and partner with other agencies. What we do brings with it high levels of responsibility and expectation.

  • The Tongan Health Society operates in health centres across Auckland at Onehunga, Ōtāhuhu, Kelston and Panmure. The Society is an RNZCGP accredited practice and offers a range of high quality primary care and social services predominantly to Pacific clients and works with a wide range of Allied Healthcare Professionals in its service delivery.

    JOB PURPOSE 

    The Practice Nurse provides quality, accessible primary health care nursing services and supports patient interventions and treatment in targeting clients to achieve good clinical and non-clinical outcomes. 

    The nurse will work with General Practitioners and other core members of the Primary Health Care team. We have opportunities available for both part-time and full-time role.

    CORE COMPETENCIES AND ESSENTIAL SKILLS 

    • A current Annual Practicing Certificate according to NZ Nursing Council requirements 

    • A current Vaccinator Certificate 

    • A current Practicing Certificate in CPR – Level 5 

    • Competent in Medtech32 

    • Experienced in triaging patients 

    • Venepuncture skills, including blood tests and IVL insertion 

    • Experience in wound management 

    • Capable of managing long term conditions

    • The ability to work independently and part of a team, and show initiative and accountability for own actions 

    • Competent in using Best Practice Intelligence 

    • Good communication skills

    • Full clean New Zealand Driving License 

    • Must have New Zealand Residency or Citizenship 

    • With primary care experience.

  • Langimalie Early Childhood Education Centre, based in Manurewa, plays a vital role in the local community by providing children and parents with a quality early education service that is safe, warm, welcoming and Pacific.  

    We are a small team of teachers that are dedicated to providing our children with a varied, active and relevant programme to give them the best possible start in education.

    JOB PURPOSE

    The Early Childhood Teacher is responsible for providing a safe and developmentally appropriate preschool programme in accordance with all relevant legislation, policies and procedures.

    ESSENTIAL SKILLS

    • Degree in ECE teaching practice 

    • Full teacher registration from New Zealand and Teachers Council

    • Knowledge of the current New Zealand early childhood curriculum

    • Understanding of strategic plans and their implementation

    • No convictions or cases pending for fraud, physical assault or substance abuse (includes alcohol) (subject to Police Vet Check)

    • Warm and friendly personality

    • Good time management

    • Enjoy being with children

    DESIRABLE SKILLS

    • Full Driver License

    Purpose of the Role:

    To support improved diabetes outcomes for Pacific peoples by delivering high-quality blood collection services across in-clinic, after-hours, community, and event-based settings. This role will contribute to earlier diagnosis, better monitoring, and culturally safe diabetes care, with a strong focus on high-risk and hard-to-reach Pacific clients.  The role is aimed to improve the uptake and access of pacific clients with diabetes to have regular blood testing as part of best practice management.

    Key Responsibilities:

    1. Phlebotomy Services

    • Perform venepuncture and capillary testing across Langimālie medical centres, outreach events, after-hours clinics, and home visits.

    • Support opportunistic testing during Diabetes Outreach Events, with focus on HbA1c, renal, and lipid panels.

    2. Diabetes Programme Contribution

    • Assist in identifying and reaching patients with overdue or high-risk diabetes bloods, especially those with HbA1c >80 mmol/mol.

    • Coordinate with the diabetes recall team and navigators to support outreach follow-up and patient education.

    3. Community Engagement

    • Provide on-site blood testing at monthly Diabetes Outreach Events and community-based health events.

    • Work alongside Tongan-speaking clinicians, dietitians, and diabetes nurses to deliver culturally appropriate services.

    • Build rapport with clients and families, supporting informed consent and addressing anxieties around testing.

    4. Documentation & Quality

    • Accurately label, record, and dispatch samples to designated labs in accordance with clinical protocols.

    • Maintain documentation in patient records (Medtech/PMS) and contribute to outreach data collection for research and quality improvement.

    • Adhere to infection control and safety protocols.

    5. Cultural Safety

    • Deliver services in a culturally safe and respectful manner, supporting Pacific languages and health beliefs where applicable.

    • Participate in cultural competency training and team talanoa sessions.

    • Diabetes Clinical Nurse Specialist, Diabetes Nurse, Navigators

    • GPs and NPs at Langimālie

    • Recall and outreach team

    • Research team (e.g. data collection at events)

    PERSON SPECIFICATION

    Essential:

    • Minimum 2 years’ phlebotomy experience.

    • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously in a clinical or community setting.

    • Full NZ driver’s licence and willingness to travel to homes and community venues.

    • Understanding of the Pacific context in South Auckland.

    • Ability to work evenings and weekends on a rotating schedule.

    Desirable:

    • Prior experience with Pacific or high-needs communities.

    • Familiarity with HbA1c monitoring and diabetes pathways.

    • Basic Tongan or other Pacific language capability an advantage.

    • Familiarity with primary care IT systems (e.g. Medtech).

    About the Role:
    As a Nurse Specialist/Nurse Practitioner, you will:

    • Deliver expert care for clients with diabetes, including phlebotomy, medication titration, and management.

    • Serve as a nurse prescriber, ensuring clients receive timely, effective treatment.

    • Develop and implement individualised care plans tailored to each client's needs and cultural background.

    • Administer vaccinations for those with chronic conditions, particularly in outreach settings.

    • Actively engage with clients and whānau in their homes and communities to improve access and adherence to care.

    • Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to address complex health needs.

    What We’re Looking For:

    • Registered Nurse with a current APC (Annual Practicing Certificate) and nurse prescriber/practitioner qualification.

    • Demonstrated experience in diabetes care, including medication titration and phlebotomy.

    • Ability to vaccinate individuals with chronic conditions, particularly in community and outreach settings.

    • Proven ability to work within a multidisciplinary team.

    • Strong cultural competence and experience working with Pacific families.

    • Excellent communication and organisational skills, with a proactive approach to client care.
