The Tongan Health Society (THS) has been operational for 20+ years. The Society has four medical centres based at Onehunga, Ōtāhuhu, Panmure and Kelston.

We provide high-quality services at six school-based clinics in South Auckland, a Community Centre and Garden in Onehunga, a specialised Integrated Outcomes Unit based at our Onehunga clinic, a research centre in Manukau, and an ECE Preschool in Manurewa.

We employ General Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Social Workers, Navigators, Administrators, Researchers and ECE Teachers. Our work is done in clinics, preschool, homes, schools, church halls and the community. We work with children, adults, families, youth, and elderly. We work with people from all cultures; we value diversity and inclusivity. We research and partner with other agencies. What we do brings with it high levels of responsibility and expectation.

  • The Tongan Health Society operates in health centres across Auckland at Onehunga, Ōtāhuhu, Kelston and Panmure. The Society is an RNZCGP accredited practice and offers a range of high quality primary care and social services predominantly to Pacific clients and works with a wide range of Allied Healthcare Professionals in its service delivery.

High number of families we work with are experiencing a variety of challenges in life including health, financial, addiction, employment, education, drugs, alcohol, relationship problems to name a few.

    MAIN PURPOSE

    The primary function of the Youth Practitioner role is to engage and work with young people and their families, supporting youth development by fostering positive relationships and implementing strategies that promote personal growth and wellbeing.

    This role provides guidance for youth in navigating challenges, accessing resources and preparing for long-term employment.

    ESSENTIAL

    Qualifications & Certifications

    • Evidence of training in youth wellbeing

    • Clean and valid Full Drivers Licence

    • Has held management position in areas of youth development

    Experience

    • Minimum 2 years’ experience in social service sector

    • Previous experience in participating in service development initiatives

    Other attributes

    • Nuanced knowledge and awareness of issues faced by minority groups Ability to use Pasifika frameworks in providing support to clients

    • Passion about working towards equitable outcomes

    • Effective interpersonal, public speaking and communication skills

    • Clean criminal convictions history and police records

    • Good working knowledge of computer systems, especially in Microsoft Office suite

    DESIRABLE

    Qualifications & Certifications

    • Valid Social Workers Registration with current practicing certificates

    • Post-graduate study related to youth wellbeing

    • Evidence of training in talking therapy, e.g., CBT, MI, ACT, DBT, or BSFT

    Experience

    • Track record of being a professional practitioner in youth development

    JOB PURPOSE 

    The Practice Nurse provides quality, accessible primary health care nursing services and supports patient interventions and treatment in targeting clients to achieve good clinical and non-clinical outcomes. 

    The nurse will work with General Practitioners and other core members of the Primary Health Care team. We have opportunities available for both part-time and full-time role.

    CORE COMPETENCIES AND ESSENTIAL SKILLS 

    • A current Annual Practicing Certificate according to NZ Nursing Council requirements 

    • A current Vaccinator Certificate 

    • A current Practicing Certificate in CPR – Level 5 

    • Competent in Medtech32 

    • Experienced in triaging patients 

    • Venepuncture skills, including blood tests and IVL insertion 

    • Experience in wound management 

    • Capable of managing long term conditions

    • The ability to work independently and part of a team, and show initiative and accountability for own actions 

    • Competent in using Best Practice Intelligence 

    • Good communication skills

    • Full clean New Zealand Driving License 

    • Must have New Zealand Residency or Citizenship

    Key Responsibilities:

    • Identification of potential families to enroll in the Whanau Ora programme. 

    • Application and completion of the assessment tool (MAST) to potential families. 

    • Facilitate formal invitation and enrolment of families into the programme including consent and confidentiality agreements. 

    • Conduct formal assessment of family needs to inform and complete family plans and interventions to follow. 

    • Provide individual support to families to complete and implement their family plans and strategies. 

    • Ongoing monitoring and reporting on a quarterly basis on progress against the family plan. 

    • Ongoing review including a survey of progress.

    • Participate in Whanau Ora Navigator training, Penelope training, and Microcredentialling training

    Essential Skills:

    • Experience dealing with Pacific clients and their families.

    • Understands the fundamental Pacific values, beliefs and practices, and models of care.

    • Able to engage effectively with and communicate with clients and their families.

    • Familiar with data entry tools such as Client Relationship Management (CRM), Monitoring Assessment Scoring Tool (MAST), patient management systems – e.g.  MedTech, Mohio.

    • Understands clinical/non-clinical service delivery using the Whanau Ora models of care and outcome-focused navigation (training will be provided)

    • Excellent case management skills.

    • Understanding of generic non-clinical navigation pathways on behalf of clients.

    Desirable Skill:

    Bilingual in English & Tongan

  • Tongan Health Society Inc. is looking for an experienced, highly motivated, and skilled Mental Health Nurse to join our innovative Primary Mental Health Team.

    JOB PURPOSE

    This position will provide a range of clinical services in addressing complex health needs of mental health patients. You will work with a multi-skilled team in a multidisciplinary environment. Making a difference to the health of families affected by mental health issues is the aim of the service underpinned by a stepped care model of care and Whanau ora model of care.

    KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Provide personal counselling or mental health nursing services to clients within your scope of practise using validated relevant and appropriate tools.

    • be involved in developing positive relationships with clients through restorative and mediation meetings. 

    • Provide advice and guidance in all aspect of mental health nursing services to clients and their families.

    • Liaise with outside agencies e.g. CYPS, Police, support groups, etc.

    • Liaise with external agencies and make referrals as appropriate. 

    • Facilitate Whanau Ora referrals for mental health support for appropriate clients. 

    CORE COMPETENCIES AND ESSENTIAL SKILLS

    • A current Annual Practicing Certificate w

    • Experience in mental health nursing

    • Understand Whanau Ora Models of care.

    • Understand mental health stepped care models.

    • The ability to work independently. 

    • Work in both clinical and outreach settings.

    • Report writing and data analysis.

    • Good English communication skills. Tongan language desirable but not essential

    • Experience working with Pacific clients.

    • Carry a clean full NZ driver license.

  • Langimalie Early Childhood Education Centre, based in Manurewa, plays a vital role in the local community by providing children and parents with a quality early education service that is safe, warm, welcoming and Pacific.  

    We are a small team of teachers that are dedicated to providing our children with a varied, active and relevant programme to give them the best possible start in education.

    JOB PURPOSE

    The Early Childhood Teacher is responsible for providing a safe and developmentally appropriate preschool programme in accordance with all relevant legislation, policies and procedures.

    ESSENTIAL SKILLS

    • Degree in ECE teaching practice 

    • Full teacher registration from New Zealand and Teachers Council

    • Knowledge of the current New Zealand early childhood curriculum

    • Understanding of strategic plans and their implementation

    • No convictions or cases pending for fraud, physical assault or substance abuse (includes alcohol) (subject to Police Vet Check)

    • Warm and friendly personality

    • Good time management

    • Enjoy being with children

    DESIRABLE SKILLS

    • Full Driver License

    • Bilingual in Tongan and English
