Pacific Outreach Programme

The project has two key objectives:

  • Use an outreach focus to collaborate with the Ministry of Health in Tonga, including Chronic Disease (CD) and non-CD nurses and other Ministry staff in villages, initially in Tongatapu.

  • Develop a THS satellite clinic in the Kingdom that aligns with the THS clinics in Auckland and the new model of care that THS has developed.

Outreach Programme – Tonga

THS staff undertook the initial part of the programme in the villages of ‘Ahau and Lapaha in November 2014 and followed up this work in April 2015. THS is particularly interested in clients with chronic conditions and youth. Future work will include health promotion and screening initiatives in high schools and villages.

The Tongan Royal family have offered land for THS to develop its envisaged satellite clinic in Tonga and HRH Princess Mele Siu’ilikutapu Kalaniuvalu Fotofili is engaged with supporting and promoting the programme.

Our Pacific Outreach service is dedicated to improving vaccination rates for all ages, including flu and COVID-19 shots. By utilising the Childhood Immunisation Prioritisation Matrix to deliver fāmili-centred services closer to home, we improve our capability to respond quickly to public health and disease outbreaks and enhance access to healthcare irrespective of enrolment or other access barriers.

Outreach Programme – Auckland

The service operates from mobile clinics that visit various locations across the city, offering services such as mental health, dental care, immunisation, screening, and health promotion. It also works closely with other health providers, community organisations, and churches to ensure that we meet the needs and preferences of Tongan people. It is staffed by a team of qualified and experienced health professionals who speak Tongan and understand our Tongan community's cultural values and beliefs.
